I’ve been working on this for the last week and a half. Every day I came home from work and immediately got my hands dirty, didn’t even stop for supper until dark.
I couldn’t work last weekend because my sister was getting married 200 miles away and then it was raining. I also had to take some time today to catch up on housework I’ve slacked off on in the last little bit. Project Jeep> dishes.
The backstory is that on my first day at a new job in May of 2014, because of some poor logistics, I woke up ten minutes before I had to be at work and about 70 miles away. I made it there in 40 minutes. But apparently that was a bit too hard of a push for my 498,000km ‘91 Jeep Comanche’s 4.0. By the time I made it to work, it had developed a severe crankshaft knock, and filled the oil with large-flake glitter. It was the last trip it made, and it got dragged home on a rented dolly behind my Dad’s ‘02 Envoy. It sat in his driveway until last Monday, when I dragged it back here to my place, along with a rusted out $300 XJ Cherokee Country.
Over the course of the last week and a half, I pulled the motor, trans, and t-case (as a unit) out of the MJ and replaced it all with the parts from the XJ, all in my back yard.
This was my first engine swap, and it went pretty alright. The A/C still even blows ice cold. But I’m not quite finished yet. I haven’t bolted the hood back on yet (do I really need to?) and the rear driveshaft is also staying out until I can sort out an issue with the VSS. Oh, and I suppose I should put the exhaust back on at some point. I’m pretty excited about driving it again. Like, seriously excited. Beyond moving it around the yard a couple times, and loading/unloading, I haven’t really driven it for 16 months.
More (and pics) to follow when I get everything sorted out.
Jeep on!
